Without the big red vans the postal service would be in an even bigger state than it already is which is saying something. The Royal mail seems to be in complete ruins so the question to ask is, how on earth do they manage to deliver all of the mail on a normal day, let alone the day in which they are on strike. Well what is supposed to happen is that the postman will receive a load of letters and parcels to deliver to the various roads he has been assigned to. When he gets to a certain point in his route one of the famous red postal vans will show up. When the van pulls up the driver will unload the next lot of mail for the worker to use in the next lot of roads he needs to deliver in. Why is it that it is never on time?

Time is actually very important here as they start later. The bicycle has always been a favourite for short haul transport. But get older or become more unfit cycling is a difficult option as we try to travel further. This is now changing with the use of electric powered bicycles. Unfortunately,there are some misnomers surrounding electric bikes as with any new products.

This article intends to briefly cover the types of batteries, motors, drives technology and bike choice that is currently available on the Australian market.

When related to weight, electric bikes are best stated as the less you get the more it costs. A full size aluminium electric bike weighing in at around 22kg will cost a lot more than a 40kg steel bike with lead acid batteries. It is also fair to say that the lighter the bike the more advanced the technology.

So what to look for? Let’s start with the more important factors.

Bike – Ironically when people are looking for an electric bicycle the last thing they tend to look at is the bike itself. Bikes now come in frame sizes and gear ratios and a variety of wheel. There are also a number of styles of bikes. There is no point having the best drive technology if the bike is too heavy, too big, too high, uncomfortable, etc. So bike comfort should be the number one priority. The following considerations need to be prioritised in order of, size of rider, size of wheel, weight, type of bike for comfortable usage.

Nothing else matters if the electric bike frame is too big or too small. Bike frames range from 17” right up to 24” for 26” wheel bikes. For the rider to stand feet flat on the ground and cross bar at least 1-2” below crotch,the frame height should be comfortable. Larger wheel bikes are the go if reasonable distances are to be covered. Consider two wheel sizes; on a 26” bike a rider pedals to cover 8km approx, the same rider on a 20” bike will only cover 6km approx due to less distance covered for each rotation of the wheel. This can be a significant difference in the course of a days ride.

News Van- Simpsons

Kent Brockman is the newsreader from the Simpsons that has a lot to do with vans because the company obviousy own a news van. Although he doesn’t actually drive the van he has a lot to do with it as the guys in the back are the ones providing him with all of the quirky comments that he apparently comes up with himself.

The Police Van- Family Guy

The van has only ever featured in one episode of the series and was used to listen in on a conversation between Lois and an ex. Peter is of course thinking that Lois is having an afair with her ex when in reality she has just gone to the local coffee shop for a drink. Peter joins the conversation half way through and catches something that sounds bad when of course it really isn’t.

Ice-Cream Van- South Park

For this one I could mention various vans that have been in the series but thought the best one would be this. The van has only ever appeared in one episode and in the episode did not manage to serve ice-cream but to kill Kenny.

There it is, the best cartoons vans that have ever come into existance. Let us just hope that these toons looked into commercial van leasing for their vans to save a bit of money. Van contract hire could actually be a better way to use a van as it is a lot cheaper than buying one outright.
