There has been incredible innovation and advancement when it comes to motorcycle engine design. The biggest producers of motorcycles such as Suzuki, Yamaha, and Honda have spent a fortune on research and development to produce the best performing engines for motorcycles.

Almost all car manufacturers will tell you that the leading edge of engine innovation is with motorcycles instead of cars or airplanes. The innovations made in foreign and  domestic motorcycle engines often ends up migrating to automobiles. When designing new motorcycle engines the goal is always better combustion. One new strategy is to use more than four valves for each cylinder so that there is a better flow area.

The development of the motorcycle engine from the standard two valve models to the four valve models was all geared toward creating better combustion.

When Honda first introduced the four valve engine back in the 1960s it allowed for narrow valve angles and shallow combustion chambers which was able to provide good combustion when paired with a spark plug.

As early as the 1980s Yamaha was looking beyond the four valve engine for new head and valve configurations to achieve better combustion. They even went so far as to experiment with seven valves per cylinder designs. This design featured four intake valves and three exhaust valves.

They finally found the right configuration with five valves per cylinder. This design features an additional intake valve which allows for better air flow during low to medium valve lifts.

This is right where most engines spend the majority of their operating time. One of the biggest and most impressive creators of motorcycle engines in North America has to be Honda.

They have recently built a technologically advanced plant which produces more than 500,000 high tech engines each year. At this new plant they are able to combine the most advanced techniques in manufacturing with leading edge engine design to produce a premium product.
