We tend to take our vehicle’s brakes for granted. We use them throughout the day as we travel back and forth between our home, office, grocery store, mall, and other places. We depend on them for our safety, but we rarely consider them until problems emerge. Like most other auto parts, your braking system and its individual components endure wear and tear. Given enough time, they'll eventually need to be replaced.

Most people wait until they notice pulling, pulsing, grinding, or squealing from their braking system before they take their vehicles into the shop. Below, I'll explain how each of these problems happens so you'll have a clearer understanding with regard to your car's brakes.

Pulling To The Side

In some cases, pressing on the pedal to slow your car might result in your vehicle pulling to one side. Turn the whell slightly to the other side to compensate for the pull. Several factors can cause this. For example, if oil leaks onto the pads or the shoes on one side, it can prevent the brake's operation. The pulling can also be caused by the pads or shoes not being adjusted properly.

Grinding and Squealing

This is a common “wear and tear” problem; pads and shoes will eventually wear down. When they do, they’ll contribute to friction, which causes squealing. Normally, the problem can be resolved relatively inexpensively by replacing the worn parts. If the problem is allowed to persist, the rotor may become damaged, which leads to a grinding noise. When that happens, the cost of repairs will increase because the rotor will need to be smoothed.

The Pulsing Pedal

When you feel pulsing in the brake pedal, it can be causes by the anti-lock system being engaged. However, more often than not, the pulsing is caused by a warped rotor. A rotor can become warped over time due to heat, friction, and even moisture. The warp causes an uneven surface, which leads to the pulse you’ll feel in the pedal. This can normally be resolved by smoothing the rotor.

Lackluster Performance

You might find that, over time, your brakes become far less effective toward slowing your vehicle than they once were. This can be due to a few different reasons. First, the pads and shoes can crystallize as the result of excess heat due to friction. Second, an oil seal may develop a leak allowing oil to soak the pads and shoes. Third, if the engine develops a vaccuum problem, your brake performance can suffer.

As a San Diego auto repair shop owner I am asked to inspect some of these used cars.Because when you have decided to buy that used car, you do not want to purchase a lemon.So by taking the time to perform a good inspection, you may avoid costly repairs.

About Chopper Motorcycle Brake Components:

Keeping your chopper motorcycle brake components in perfect operating condition is one of the most important jobs of the motorcycle enthusiast. If you are not able to smoothly make a stop and be safe about it as needed, you are presenting yourself to a dangerous situation which can include destroying your chopper motorcycle. This is something that riders never want to happen.

There are different components to braking systems, and there are different braking systems on each brand of motorcycle. The most common configuration is a disc brake in the front which is controlled by a lever mounted by the right handlebar and a drum rear brake controlled by a foot pedal on the right side. Newer bikes have linked braking systems (LBS) which activate the brakes which prevent the brakes from locking. There are some integrated systems that allow the front brake level to control part of the rear brake but not in a fully linked system as with LBS braking.

Chopper motorcycle disc braks have more than a few components. A disc-like object called a rotor is attached to the wheel. The caliper is mounted and on the edge of the rotor it sits. When this type of brake is activated, one or more pistons cause hydraulic pressure to compress the caliper, causing it to come in contact with the rotor. The friction created from this contact is what causes the wheel to stop turning.

Rotors can be fixed or floating. The floating rotor can move as well as expand and contract. This cools it down, and as a result improves your bikes braking performance.

Some motorcycle include Anti-locking Braking Systems (ABS). You may be aware of this type of braking system because they have been used on cars for quite some time. When brakes are applied to an ABS system, a computer control steps in and prevents the brakes from locking by applying and releasing brake pressure rapidly.

Some older chopper motorcycles and even some later model trikes use drum brakes on the rear. Drum brake systems include a drum and brake shoes. The rotating drum is forced to slow when the brake shoes contact it once the brakes are activated. Because these braking systems are not nearly as efficient and require longer stopping distances, they are becoming a thing of the past for motorcycles.

Other parts or components of the motorcycle braking system, no matter whether the system is disc, ABS, LBS, or even an older drum system, are the master cylinder, brake lines and brake fluid. Unlike cars, there is one master cylinder for the front brake and there is another for the rear brake because motorycles have seperate systems. When pressure is applied to the brake lever or pedal, the associated master cylinder’s internal piston causes the brake fluid to create hydraulic pressure and cause the brake caliper or shoes to contact the rotor disc or drum, causing the chopper motorcycle to slow o stop.

Before you leave on a road trip check your breaking system. Add fluids only if the brake fluids are not at the correct level. Also, after any repairs that require disconnection of any brake lines, be sure to bleed your brakes so they will operate efficiently.

Summer is just one step away and this means that most of the population is preparing for the array of hobbies to be performed. Even some people who usually focus on how they can make money feel the need to go out of town once in a while.
