Christmas Comes Early With Car Gearboxes

You might think your car is working perfectly, but problems can become apparent at any time. Heading off to the relative’s house 150 miles away isn’t a pretty prospect if your car has something wrong with it. It may be that you need a new gearbox, and car gearboxes aren’t cheap.

Xmas On The Cheap

Of course, if you get the gearbox checked over and find nothing is wrong with it then you can pat yourself on the back and think about spending those pennies on something else! There are some people that will get bad news about their gearbox though, and they will need to find a specialist repair centre urgently. Don’t worry though – there are some gearbox repair centres out there that won’t charge the earth for a new gearbox fitting in your car. If costs are mounting up already this Christmas, see if the repair centre offers the option of a reconditioned gearbox, which is a great cost-effective solution.

If you’re planning on getting away this Christmas, it is wise to make sure your car is in good working order and something as integral as the gearbox isn’t going to suddenly fail on you half way down the motorway. There are people out there that neglect their annual service on their car and then find their holiday plans are ruined because the car has a fault and there isn’t time to get it fixed over the Xmas period.

New And Old Can Suffer

Also remember that new cars often need gearbox problems and the like sorting out. There are cars that might have only done 10,000 miles and yet they start with gearbox problems. Of course, if you have a nearly new car then this isn’t what you want to happen, but some people are just unlucky. This year, have a happy Christmas by making sure you don’t have to pay for any car gearbox repairs!

New Drivers, Old Cars And Gearbox Problems

New drivers that have just passed their tests are often looking for that perfect car, and yet the prospect of being able to head out in a car alone can fill people with different emotions. Once the driving instructor isn’t in the passenger seat next to you, its up to you to make the decisions. In most cases though, the majority of drivers are just relieved that they finally have some independence!

Do You Know The Inner Workings Of Your Car?

Of course, when you’re caught up in all the excitement of becoming a new driver, it is easy to overlook some of the important things like the car you’re going to have. It could be that your parents have bought you a vehicle and it is verging on being an old banger. With the recession still biting at the heels of drivers, not everyone can pay for a new car and an older car is the only option, but then you have to take into consideration all the extra problems you may encounter. Some new drivers find that gearbox problems are common in their old motors, so they have to do something about it.

Find The Info Yourself

Any understanding parent should point a new driver in the direction of where they need to be for getting their gearbox problems sorted. Actually, you don’t have to do a lot of digging, because there are some specialist gearbox repair centres in the UK that are capable of dealing with a whole host of nasty gearbox problems. Reputable companies will get your car as good as new.

The next thing you’re probably going to be concerned about is the cost. Gearbox problems aren’t cheap to fix – especially if you go to a main dealer – but there are some cost-effective options out there. Plus, some specialist garages will be able to offer you the reconditioned gearbox option will save a lot of money.

The Importance Of Getting Your Car Gearbox Repaired

If you think you would panic if your car started faltering, don’t feel like you’re the only one. Many people would panic if something went wrong internally, and if you know more about your car’s aesthetics rather than its inner workings, its likely that you’re going to need a bit of help when something develops a fault. And although men are usually the ones that know more about cars, it is sometimes the case that even they don’t know what do with an internal fault issue like a faulty gearbox. Car gearboxes are notoriously hard pieces of kit for people to get their head round, and just looking at one may surprise you when you learn that it is a main function of the car. Does that small component really control so much? When the car gearbox is faulty, the only option is to take it to the local garage so it can be looked at by a professional.

Nursing Your Car Better

Once admitted to the garage, the mechanic will check it over and probably request that your car stays overnight so they have longer to make sure they find out what the problem is.   It’s a bit like a hospital admission for your poorly relative, although in this case it is your car that’s poorly. Whereas some won’t bat an eyelid about leaving their car at the garage for open heart surgery, others will get quite distressed about the whole thing. But don’t worry – the mechanic will get the car as good as new when the gearbox has been repaired, or replaced – whichever they recommend. You will have to make a decision about what you want to do with your car gearbox, and this will mean having it replaced with a brand new one or having a reconditioned gearbox fitted. Usually, you can choose whether you have a new gearbox fitted or have a reconditioned gearbox put in place, and the choice boils down to the cost. In the world of car gearbox repairs, cost is always an important factor and a reconditioned gearbox is the cheaper option for all parties concerned.

Happy, Healthy Driving

After you have made the decision about what the mechanic should do, it is then up to the mechanic to get the car back to good health. Without the gearbox the car is worthless. There isn’t really an alternative to getting your gearbox repaired, as it is either that or send the car to the scrapheap, which you’re unlikely to want to do. Get the car to a specialist repair centre ASAP and then the car will get fixed promptly and you can be back driving again soon after.

Buy Auto Parts From A Salvage Yard?

One of the advantages of keeping your older vehicle is that you’ll avoid the high cost and monthly payments associated with a newer car (not to mention the depreciation). Having said that, components wear out after tens of thousands of miles and several years of use. Finding replacement parts that will put your vehicle back on the road at a price that doesn’t blow your budget can be a challenge. A lot of motorists look toward junkyards as a reliable source of used car parts. But, is it a good idea to buy them there?

This article will explore some of the advantages and drawbacks of purchasing used components at salvage yards. I’ll explain how these vendors have changed over the years and offer a few tips for chasing down the used car parts you need. We’ll also take a realistic look at the potential cost savings.

This Ain’t Your Daddy’s Salvage Yard

If the last time you visited a junkyard was more than a decade ago, you may be surprised by the changes. Long ago, the carcasses of automobiles were strewn lazily throughout a plot of dirt. If you needed to find a particular component, you would spend time looking through the wreckage hoping to stumble upon it. Asking an employee for help was a hit-or-miss proposition; they would often be unaware of the items within their inventory.

Today, everything is computerized with each item stored within a database. Every water pump, radiator, passenger seat, and stereo knob can be found wtih the click of a button. If you need to find a specific item, you won’t be forced to spend hours digging through a dirty lot. Just ask an attendant to check the database. What’s more, a lot of salvage yards are now connected through a network. If one location cannot find a component in their database, they can check the databases of other locations.

How Much Money Can You Expect To Save?

All junkyards differ in terms of pricing. The amount you can expect to save will vary based on the item you’re searching for. Car seats, for example, might carry higher savings that fuel pumps. As a general rule, you should expect to pay 40% to 50% less than you would for a comparable new unit. A brand new “straight-from-the-box” alternator might cost $200. At a junkyard, you should expect to pay 0 to 0 for the same brand and model.

An important point should be made here. Buying certain components from a salvage yard is risky because you won’t know whether there are defects. If you’re purchasing a replacement rear bumper for your car, there’s little need for concern. However, brake systems, water pumps, alternators, and catalytic converters are more difficult to judge. One small defect can lead to a failure. I always recommend buying used auto parts that meet OEM standards. They’re far less likely to fail. Whether they’re new or remanufactured, the peace of mind they offer is well worth the higher price.

3 Things To Check If Your Car Won’t Start

When you turn your key in the ignition and your car won’t start, a feeling of dread shoots through your mind. There are lots of things that might prevent your engine from turning over. Identifying the problem can easily become a frustrating mystery. In order to effectively troubleshoot the issue, you’ll need to have a basic understanding with regard to what happens between your ignition and the motor. There are a lot of parts along the line and any one of them can cause a glitch.

In this article, I’ll provide a short list of three things you should check when your engine fails to roar to life.

#1 – Battery

Most non-starting problems are caused by the battery. Sometimes, the poles become corroded and the connection suffers. Sometimes the battery drains so much it doesn’t carry a suffient charge to fire the engine. In some cases, it dies completely.

Use battery cleaner to remove corroision on the poles. If, after cleaning the poles, you’re still unable to turn the motor, it’s likely that your battery is drained or dead. Unless you have a tester with which to gauge the amperage, jump start your vehicle. It’s pretty safe to assume that if it starts immediately, you need a new battery.

#2 – Ignition Switch

Bad ignition switches don’t happen nearly as often as dead batteries, but they do malfunction and they’re easy to check. To be certain that your switch is working properly, turn your key so that your car is “on” (as opposed to the “starting” position). Then, look at your dashboard. If your ignition switch is working, you’ll see warning indicators appear on the dash. This is normal. Now, turn the key further (to “start”). The warning indicators should disappear.

You can also test the switch by turning your headlights on prior to starting your vehicle. If, when you try to crank the engine, the lamps do not dim, your switch is bad.

#3 – The Starter Connection

You won’t be able to easily test whether your starter is working properly, but you can test the connection. In the same way that batteries can accumulate corrosion, so too, can your vehicle’s starter. When this happens, it reduces the integrity of the connection and can prevent your motor from cranking. If there is no corrosion, but you still suspect that your starter is causing the issue, you can use a circuit tester to test the connection.

Vehicles tend to leave us stranded because of faulty connections or failing parts. The good news is that your vehicle isn’t as mysterious as you might think. While there are many components under the hood that can prevent your engine from turning over, most problems are associated with the battery, ignition switch, and starter. Armed with a circuit tester, jumper cables, and a friend, you’ll often be able to fix the problem without taking your car to a repair shop.

Is Synthetic Oil Better For Your Car?

The question regarding whether normal or synthetic oil is better for your vehicle’s engine is nearly as popular as the debate behind using premium gas. A lot of drivers feel compelled to use it. But, is it truly worth the higher cost? In the same way many motorists buy premium gasoline without understanding why they need it (assuming they even do need it), a lot of people purchase synthetic blends based on fallacies or a lack of information.

In this article, we’ll explore this issue in more detail. We will start by examining how these "premium" lubricants are made, and we'll discuss the pros and cons of using them in your car.

How Conventional Lubricants Are Made

When crude is pumped from the ground, it is separated into different parts for a variety of uses, including tar for roofs and asphalt for roads and highways. A portion of it is set aside for refinement so that it can be used in gasoline and related items. Many consider the petroleum refinement process to be very highly advanced. However, it’s not perfect. A number of contaminants – such as hydrocarbons – cannot be completely eliminated from the base material. They find their way into motor oil.

This may seem insignificant. But, over time, those contaminants can take a toll on your car’s engine. By contrast, synthetic blends have fewer contaminants and are therefore considered to be “easier” on your engine.

Advantages

The main advantage to using a synthetic lubricant in your vehicle is that it flows more easily. In normal driving conditions, the variance in viscosity won’t make much of a difference. However, it can prove valuable in colder temperatures. The oil will circulate more quickly due to flowing more easily than conventional lubricants.

Another advantage is that these blends do not need to be changed as often. This is due largely to the fact that they break down under intense heat and friction more gradually. While a conventional product might need to be changed at 5,000 miles, a synthetic oil can often endure 10,000 miles or more.

Disadvantage

The main drawback is price. These blends often cost nearly twice the price of conventional lubricants. However, it’s worth noting the cost difference is less severe since synthesized blends don’t need to be replaced as often.

Because these special lubricants flow more easily, they are not recommended for cars with a lot of mileage on them. Engines that have a large number of miles on them need a product that is less slippery. Otherwise, excess friction between the parts can result. That said, if your owner's manual recommends that you use a synthetic oil in your vehicle, follow that advice.

Adding a Grille Guard and a Towing Ball Hitch to Your Vehicle Can be a Smart Choice

Keeping up your vehicle goes beyond just performing regular system checks and oil changes.  There are several auto accessories items that can add years to the life of your car, and make it look great as you drive it around town.  Truck owners are beginning to utilize grille guard to protect and enhance the front end of their truck.  Since these accessories provide an extra layer of protection, you can save your car from costly auto body repair.  Grille guards are available for both trucks and SUVs, and are a product that performs a valuable function.  A grille guard can be more effective than fender flares or a spoiler because it actually shields a vehicle by building a layer of protection from things that can damage your car.

If you love to go off-roading, you know the importance of a front grill guard .  Especially in these circumstances, you will want to purchase a truck grille guard and a skid plate.  Whereas the grill guard works by protecting the bumper and grill of the truck, the skid plate stops rocks and other things from damaging the suspension of your truck.  The other benefit of putting a durable bumper grille guard to an off-road vehicle is that it provides a perfect mounting surface for off-road lights.  You now have the proper equipment to off-road after the sun goes down!

Shock absorbers are an important part of every car, but above all off-road vehicles.  Essentially, Monroe shock absorbers counteract the movement and shock that is the result of the road.  Any person who has ever been off-roading, or even felt the effects of a large pot-hole realizes the benefit of  having good shock absorbers.  Shock absorbers compress and then rebound.  When you pass over a bump or a large opening in the street, the shock absorber drives a piston into the cavity  (compression).  After the bump has been cleared, the shock decompresses (rebound).  This allows your wheels to move up and down with the contour of the road.  Such a simple auto part completely improves the performance of your truck.

If you love camping, boating and jet skiing you know that a tow hitch is a must-have for your truck.  Towing hitches, also called trailer hitches, are made in a range of shapes and sizes for various uses. Generally speaking, there are two classifications of a towing hitch: weight-carrying or weight-distributing. Depending on the vehicle you will use to tow and the size of the trailer, you will pick a towing hitch that best fits your needs.  A Weight-carrying (WC) hitch can be used with trailers weighing up to 3,500 pounds, and where the weight and suspension of the tow vehicle can accommodate that load.  Weight-distributing (WD) towing ball hitch can be easily attached to Class 3/4 or Class 5 receivers.  The Weight-distributing towing hitch redistributes hitch tongue weight (TW) and is mostly used for trailers that weigh up to 10,000 pounds.

These key auto accessories can make your truck more comfortable and useful in a relatively economical way.

The Benefits of New Shock Absorbers and a Tow Hitch

Preserving your truck includes other things than just performing standard system checks and oil changes.  A few auto enhancements can help your vehicle take on a new life, and add to the look of your vehicle as you drive it all over town.  Truck owners are beginning to purchase truck grille guard to protect and enhance the front end of their truck.  Because of the extra layer of protection provided by these automotive accessories, you can save your car from pricey auto body repair.  Grille guards are made for both trucks and SUVs, and serve as a very functional car enhancement.  A grille guard does more for a vehicle than fender flares or a spoiler because it actually shields a vehicle by building a layer of protection from cars, rocks and wet paint that can cause damage.

A truck grille guard can really help protect your truck if you like to take it off-roading.  Paticularly in these circumstances, you will get the most benefits from using a grill guard and a skid plate.  While the grille guard works by shielding the bumper and grill of the truck, the skid plate provides a strong shield between a truck’s suspension and rocks or anything else that may damage the suspension.  The other advantage of placing a sturdy front grill guard to an off-road vehicle is that it provides a perfect mounting surface for off-road lights.  Adding off-road lights lets you get out after dark!

A new set of  Gabriel shock absorbers are important to every vehicle, but particularly off-road vehicles.  Essentially, air shock absorbers absorb the shock that is caused by uneven road surfaces.  Anybody who has ever been off-roading, or even felt the effects of a large pot-hole knows the benefit of  having good Monroe shock absorbers.  Shock absorbers compress and then rebound.  When you drive over a bump or a large opening in the street, the shock absorber pushes a piston into the cavity  (compression).  As you exit the hole, the shock decompresses (rebound).  Your wheels are then free to move without you feeling every bump and dip in the road.  Such a minor auto part completely enhances the performance of your truck.

A tow hitch is a great addition to a truck for people that are always on the go.  Towing hitches, also called trailer hitches, are available in a number of shapes and sizes to fit their specific use. Generally speaking, a towing hitch is classified as either weight-carrying or weight-distributing. Depending on the type of truck you use to tow and the length and weight of the trailer, you will pick a trailer hitch that meets your requirements.  A Weight-carrying (WC) hitch is used with trailers weighing up to 3,500 pounds, and where the weight and suspension of the tow vehicle can manage that load.  Weight-distributing (WD) trailer towing hitch are an attachment that slides into a Class 3/4 or Class 5 weight-carrying receiver hitch.  The Weight-distributing towing hitch redistributes hitch tongue weight (TW) and is usually used for heavier trailers up to 10,000 pounds.

These key auto accessories can make your truck more comfortable and useful in a relatively economical way.
