Spotlight on the 2010 Ford Mustang

One of the most classic and loved cars in all of American history is no doubt the Ford Mustang. Its classic muscle car power and sleek lines have captured the hearts of car lovers for decades. Since its initial release in 1964, Ford knew they had a legend on their hands. Regardless of the many design changes the Mustang has undergone through the years, it has held its place on the list of classic American cars.

 

The Mustang has been in constant production since 1964 but has had many different looks. In 1974, the second generation Mustang was introduced to cope with more strict pollution laws. The Mustang had another overhaul in 1979 and again in 1994. The Mustang released in 1994 was the first major redesign this model had seen. This model had more modern, aerodynamic lines that strayed a bit from its classic muscle car days.

In 2005, Ford introduced another new, completely redesigned Mustang. This model was more reminiscent of its classic muscle car look with boxy, powerful lines. Interest in the classic car peaked when the new designed was revealed. In the times of hybrids and SUV’s, the new Mustang was a sigh of relief for car lovers everywhere. The 2010 redesign of the Mustang was no different and lived up to this car’s legendary status.

The new 2010 Mustang has kept its boxy, muscle car look but has improved the not-so-noticeable features. The first upgrade the new Mustang received was its interior. The 2010 model has more metallic features, including round dials on the dashboard and an optional Ford/Microsoft Sync system. The exterior got a slight facelift and bears a proud resemblance to the 1969 Mustang. It has a cool four-light grille, beveled bumpers on the front and back and a huge hood scoop.

Underneath the hood, there are some obvious improvements as well. The Mustang runs a cold-air system which trims its 0-60 times, but has not increased its power too much. Previous models had 300 horsepower but the new 2010 model has about 315. They have increased the car’s redline however, which has gone from 6250 to 6500rpm. The new Mustang also comes with a stiffer suspension and its standard 18-inch tires have increased its handling.

One of the cooler observations that Car and Driver made about the new Mustang is how it manages to be both quiet and loud at the same time. You're in for a peaceful ride as long as you don't rev the engine - road and wind noise is minimal. However, if you feel the need for speed and rev up your V-8 engine, you can hear the power in surround sound, so to speak. Ford has introduced what is called a “sound induction tube” that connects the intake to the cabin of the car. This tube transmits only certain frequencies while restricting air flow – that’s pretty high-tech!

Another great thing about the new Mustang is the fact that even though Ford has made some improvements, they haven’t increased the price much. A base model V-6 Mustang will go for just under $22,000 while a GT will cost you just under $29,000. Gas mileage isn’t too bad either for a sporty ride. It will get you about 15mpg city and 23 highway. "Green" it isn't, but it is a poweful, fun ride - the stuff of legends. All in all, the new Mustang has gotten great reviews and you can be sure that new customers and loyal Mustang owners alike will be lining up for the new 2010 pony.

I am always looking for an old classic car, especially the 1973 Mustang Mach 1.  I would like to share with you the background behind the history of the Ford Mustang.

History of the 1st Generation Ford Mustangs

Everyone has heard of the Mustang, but in case you have been a hermit the last fifty years, this is a car and not a horse. It was developed by the Ford Motor Company. From 1964 to 1973, first generation Mustangs were the ultimate muscle car ride. The Ford Falcon was retooled to become the legendary Mustang. With the sales of the Falcon beginning to wain, Ford started to begin the process of phasing it out of the marketplace. It was the point in time in which the Ford Mustang could come in and make a big splash.

The day was one that many car collectors can quote like the date of their own birthday. It was March 9, 1964. The Mustang went into production that day and things have never been the same. It all began, the Mustang was about to take its place in automotive lore. This car brand became the most revered cars ever. In fact, to this day the first generation Mustang has a special place in the hearts of most classic car collectors. Introduced to the public at the New York world’s fair on April 17, 1964, it became Ford’s most successful launch since the model A! Mustangs have the distinction of being the only pony car in history to never drop out of production, even temporarily.

This type of car body would come to be known by many as the “pony car.The pony car was pretty small and light-weight, yet had a tremendous amount of power. The car was all American and by the late 60’s all of Detroit’s automakers were churning them out. The idea took off as a result of the mass appeal of the 64 Mustang. This car had a long hood and a short deck and a big motor. It was considered very youthful. The Mustang was the purest form of the poy car, and became a highly popular type of car design. Due to the fact that Mustangs were very popular, competitors came out the woodwork to emulate the look of the Mustang with their own version of the pony car. Cars like the Camaro, Javelin, Barracuda, Cougar, Firebird, Challenger, and later the foreign-made Toyota Celica arose from the pony car look.

Its unfortunate, but I ended up selling that old 73 Mach 1 Mustang, but I will never lose the love of that first generation Mustang. Need I say more? The first generation of Mustangs will always keep a place in my heart and in the hearts of car collectors all over the world.

BMW in combination with Mille Miglia stands for triumphs for eternity

The name says it all, and it has a legendary resonance: Mille Miglia. From its inception, this road trial covering 1,000 miles was considered the ultimate challenge for drivers and cars alike. Those who stayed the course in the Mille Miglia proved not only their competitiveness in motor sports but also their automotive engineering prowess.

Between 1927 and 1957, the Mille Miglia was staged 24 times in northern Italy. It was a spectacular event for many thousands of motor sport fans and a perfect stage for race drivers such as Tazio Nuvolari, Stirling Moss, Rudolf Caracciola, Juan Manuel Fangio and Fritz Huschke von Hanstein. But the Mille Miglia was also a crucial trial of strength for car manufacturers. It celebrated its revival in 1977 and has kept alive the spirit of classic car racing ever since. In 1925 four young men from Brescia, as wealthy as they were enthusiastic about motor racing, had resolved to turn their home town into a hub of motor sports. Two years later they saw their plans come to fruition. Henceforth, the start and finish line in Brescia would take on a carnival atmosphere, with the drivers and their automobiles enthusiastically celebrated by the numerous spectators who flocked there.

Each year racing fever spread throughout the land and not only because the cars that dominated the event were initially of Italian manufacture.

With classic car enthusiasts celebrated its revival in 1977 and, as a reliability trial for historic vehicles, has kept alive the spirit of classic car racing ever since. Nowhere other than between Brescia and Rome is the history of motor sport and automotive engineering celebrated so intensely and impressively. The Mille Miglia storica pays homage to the design engineers and their creations, which continue to inspire professionals and aficionados to this day.

Beautiful Mille Miglia stamps

The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Gran Sport shoots out from the starting line. On board are Augusto Carnato and Guglielmo Carraroli of the Ferrari scuderia (the Ferrari car stables), those romantic heroes on four wheels. They are frozen in time, in the photo dating back to 1931, as they enter the Futa Pass in the Fifth Coppa Mille Miglia.

That icon image on the stamp depicts the race.  It gives us the feeling of the drivers as they fight for first place across the thin line that divides history from legend.   

 

On Friday, April 17, in the auditorium of the Brescia Chamber of Commerce, at 12:00 noon, a press conference will be held to present the 60 cent Italian postage stamp which honors the “Mille Miglia”. Its first day of issue will be May 14, 2009.   

 

 “Speaking as an enthusiastic stamp collector and a fan of classic cars, over and beyond my being a Minister in the Italian Government, it gives me special pleasure to make the official presentation of this stamp. It honors the Mille Miglia as an image of that which is Italian in the world, a symbol of Italian excellence which is recognized abroad. A symbol then, of our industry, of our style, of refinement and taste.” so speaks Claudio Scajola the Minister of Economic Development.   

 

“Postage stamps are cult objects, which are collected, carefully conserved, and passed on from generation to generation. It is this ongoing capability, which add value to stamps. 

Today, the Italian Post Office renders homage to the Mille Miglia, considered by its fans to be ‘the race’ in terms of excellence”, stated the Postmaster General of the Italian Post Office, Giovanni Ialongo. “It is not just an event showing the courage, sacrifice and talent of the participants, which has entered, rightly so, into the history and culture of Italian and international sport.  It is also the event to show off the brilliance of the unrivaled ‘Made in Italy’ trademark.”

In the foreground is the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Gran Sport during the Mille Miglia of 1931, while the background shows some spectators.  On the right stands the official logo, the legendary Freccia Rossa (the Red Arrow), with written across the bottom BRESCIA>ROMA>BRESCIA, the route of the race. 

To complete the picture, is the face value of the stamp, “€ 0,60”, and of course, “ITALIA”, the issuing country. 

Also on sale will be an illustrative bulletin, whose article has been written by Enrico Gelpi, the President of the Automobile Club of Italy. The Stamp Collector’s Window in the Post Office of Brescia Centro will cancel the stamps on its day of issue with a special cancellation mark designed by the Philatelic Office of the Poste Italiane.   

 

The stamp has been printed by the Italian Government Mint, the Carte Valori dell’Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato S.p.A., in rotogravure, on fluorescent paper without watermarks.  The technical details are as follows: paper size 40 x 30 mm, print size, mm 36 x 26; serration: 13 x 13¼; colors: 4; quantity: 3,500,000 stamps issued; sheets: 50, sheet face value € 30.00.

The stamp and other philatelic products will be on sale at post offices throughout Italy, at the Stamp Collectors’ Window, at the stores “Spazio Filatelia” in Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples and on the website www.poste.it.
