For many businesses, their work vans are used everyday to transport goods, equipment and people, and they would really struggle without them.Ask any van owner and they will explain how their van in the work horse of their trade and when they don’t have use of it, they simply cannot do their job properly. Most vehicle owners can rely on basic insurance to cover them but it is not so straight forward for tradesmen.There are a number of different insurance requirements for business van owners, despite whether they have chosen to buy a van or use van leasing.

Van Insurance. In the interests of every other road user, all vehicles must have at least a 3rd party level of insurance. This basically means their insurance will cover will pay for any damages that occur to other people and their vehicles on the road.It is advisable however to take out more comprehensive insurance to cover owners from things such as theft or fire.

Contents Insurance. The standard insurance or even leasing insurance will often not cover the contents, and so the van owner will not be protected against damage or theft of these items, potentially meaning they lose a lot of money.

Loss of earnings. You would be amazed at just how many people fail to take out insurance to cover themselves against loss of earnings, should their van be off the road. The government in the UK has stated that it is looking into the possibility of offing van owners a £1K to get rid of their old van a long as they are older than 9 years. This idea behind this is to replicate the success of their previous car-scrapping initiative that was also recently launched. They hoped that it would lead to a boost in production and sales of new cars and additionally they would be able to take old and non-ecological cars off the roads. Seeing as there are over 3.5 millions vans in the UK that are over 9 years of age, there are definitely reasons to do the same for vans. Also new vans filter into the van leasing market over time so there are knock on positive effects. So what are some of the main safety features that can be seen on modern vans?

Stronger chassis. Something that has been seen in almost all new vans is a dramatic increase the strength of chassis. Chassis that were once considered strong found themselves prone to erosion and broke down over time, risking both driver and other road users. This has been addressed in new van design, with the metals of the chassis being stronger and treated to resist against erosion.

New Airbags. You will likely find airbags of some description in almost all cars on the road now, but sadly they did not become common place in vans until much later. Even then, for the majority of vans there were only front airbags placed in the steering wheel and maybe passage area. The latest batch of vans comprise multi-directional and dampening airbags.

Electric handbrakes. Vans, by their very nature, are built to transport heavy objects and loads. A major down floor in older vans was that when the handbrake began to wear down or malfunction, serious accidents were caused on the road as vans would roll down hills and cause untold damage. This was a particular issue in Citroen van leasing. A great deal of newer vans offer an electric handbrake that can engage automatically and offer better functioning which will hopefully reduce the incidences of accidents.
