Why a driving instructor could be right for you

Driving lessons from family or friends is inevitably less expensive than going to an expert driving instructor. But does it give you the experience for life in a car?

Once they start learning to drive, many new drivers determine to mix tuition from parents or siblings with full-time driving tuition.

That is because it ensures you get as much time driving as possible – which is valuable if you want to increase your confidence behind the wheel. But, if you rely completely on lessons from relatives instead of paid driving instructors, you could miss out on a lot.

Anyone aged over 21, who has held a full driving licence for at least three years, can give driving lessons. But in the abscence of formal training given to driving instructors, they could inadvertantly pass on any bad tendancies they have developed since learning to drive.

What’s more, driving teachers will be able to give you useful advice and assistance that you are unlikely to get from friends or family members.

For example, a qualified driving instruction will be able to help you study for the theory and hazard perception tests. This test was first introduced in 2002, so any friends or family who are experienced in a car may not have experienced it.

A trained driving instructor will also know of the likely test routes and the most suitable regions to practise driving in addition to lessons.

They are also more likely to have the practical knowledge necessary to get people through their test, highlight areas of driving that need to be practiced more and enhance confidence in the car.

Still, it is up to you to find the type of driving instruction that suits you best, be it professional lessons, more relaxed teaching from loved ones, or a combination of the two. There is no right or wrong way in learning to drive so consider the options and get behind the wheel.
