Saturn Cars Selling at Deep Discounts as GM Discontinues Brand

Saturn cars on sale

People shopping around for cars and auto loans should take notice: You might have an opportunity to get a brand new Saturn car for a used-car price. The same thing goes for Pontiacs.

General Motors is discontinuing both brands, so Pontiac and Saturn cars are basically going into fire sale mode now. I am still trying to understand exactly how this sale works, so perhaps someone out there who is more business savvy could leave a comment to fill in the missing information.

Incentives plus price slashing

First of all, GM says it will pay dealers “$ 7,000 for every new Saturn or Pontiac on their lot that is moved to rental-vehicle or service-vehicle fleets operated by the dealers,” says the Wall Street Journal. Essentially GM is paying dealers to take ownership of these cars. So that’s weird and backward. Right?

Then, dealers must label these cars as “used” because technically the dealers are the first owner, not the customer. Obviously, most of them won’t be used, and they’ll have either zero or test drive mileage on the odometer.

A little help?

What’s missing here? This strategy really makes no sense to me. Why doesn’t GM simply give a bonus for Pontiacs or Saturns sold? Why not just slash prices instead of going through the process of justifying and slapping a “used” label on there?

I’m still waiting for this to click. The brands have gotten the big ugly axe, so obviously there isn’t much, if any, value left in either Saturn or Pontiac brands. I don’t know what to say. Let me know what you think.

The bottom line

Anyway, regardless of exactly what GM and its dealers are doing and why they are doing it, you could be able to buy Pontiac and Saturn cars for super cheap, so if you’re thinking about getting a new car sometime soon, you might want to set your plan in motion sooner rather than later.

One of the most iconic cars ever created

The Pontiac Firebird is maybe one of the most iconic cars ever created, thanks to various pop culture references hooked up to it.  It was first made in 1967 by Yankee automaker General Motors, through their Pontiac division.  The firebird was introduced along with its cousin in the GM family, the Chevrolet Camaro, with which it shared a platform.  As with its competitors, it was introduced head-on with the Mercury Cougar of Ford.  The engines powering the Firebird from the start and for the majority of its existence till its last year in 2002 were V8 engines.  First, Pontiac engines powered it up to 1982 when GM engines were used.  Since its last appearance in 2002, no efforts have been made to revive the line.  The chance of a Firebird revival has further been made not possible by the discontinuation of the Pontiac brand after 2010.  This is in spite of the news that the Chevrolet Camaro will make a comeback for the 2010 model year.

The 1st generation of Firebirds was available from 1967 till 1969 and was assembled in Pontiac facilities in Van Nuys, California and Norwood, Ohio.  It was available in 2-door coupes and convertibles.  In 1969, a Trans-Am package for the Firebird was introduced, which only furthered the admiration for the ar.  A Trans-Am package featured upgraded suspension, handling, and h.p..  Aesthetic differences with the Trans-Am package include mist lights, wheels, hoods, and spoilers.  The second generation of Firebirds and Trans-Ams from 1970 to 1981 was in charge of cementing the brand in Yank pop culture.  The 2-door convertible was dropped.  The second generation car was seen in the films Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper and Smokey and the Bandit II.  The 3rd generation, which was available from 1982 till 1992, was featured in the movies Alphabet City and Smokey and the Bandit Part three.  The TV show Knight Rider featured a speaking auto, KITT, which was basically an altered Trans-am of the third generation.  Unfortunately, declining sales made General Motors can the brand, with the Pontiac GTO replacing it.

Redefining style with pizzazz

What is the most well-liked muscle car ever that goes 0 to sixty in 6.5 seconds flat?

The answer is, the 1966 Pontiac GTO which is a choice muscle auto.  In fact, when it was released, it quickly became the top selling muscle auto ever.  With the ’66 GTO, Pontiac truly created a new masterpiece which has remained in high demand among muscle automobile enthusiasts for nearly 4 decades.

The ’66 GTO has incredible features.  Most notable are the unique headlights and the outstanding contours thru the body that are the true definition of the term graceful.  Naturally, being a muscle car, the ’66 Pontiac GTO came in a variety of colors and styles when it was produced including the sports coupe model, the hardtop coupe and the convertible.

If you are shopping for a ’66 Pontiac GTO muscle car, it is maybe helpful for you to know that the hardtop coupes are the most typical, followed by the convertibles.  Comparably, there were a lot fewer sports coupe models made, so they are obviously the rarest.

Pontiac’s GTO line gained recognition with the release of their 1964 model with its racy style, its powerful V8 engine, and its twin exhaust system.  Though it had fake hood scoops, it was surely a muscle auto with an attitude.  The ’66 model had tons of the same features as the ’64, but being the second body style for Pontiac’s GTO line, it redefined style with pizzazz.

The ’66 GTO most typically has a four-barrel 389 engine, but there was also a tri-power option.  After its release, Pontiac added an XS Ram Air package to the tri-power engine giving it a warmer cam and larger power – close to 380 hp – actually perfect for a muscle car.  The XS Ram Air package upgrade included the cam and stiffer valve springs along with an accessory pack that enabled the ornamental hood scoop to be converted into a functional cold-air induction system.  There are few 1966 Pontiac GTOs that have the XS Ram Air setup, so they’re definitely unique muscle cars for a muscle auto collector.

In regard to muscle autos, there are several that are strongly desired by muscle car enthusiasts.  The 1966 Pontiac GTO just turns out to be a favorite for many .  Style, performance and originality are among the traits that make the 1966 Pontiac GTO one of the freshest muscle cars around.

The 455 Pontiac Trans Ams

Those of us lucky enough to be around in the 70s when this wonderful automobile came out drool whenever we think of it.  Imagine getting a vehicle from the factory with a 455 cubic inch engine in it!This vehicle kicked butt!  Then if you probably did some work, like we probably did to ours, as in having the engine blue released, balanced and a load more, it did even better.  Let’s just say it was doing far better then one hp per cubic inch!

This was the era of Smokey and the Bandit movies.  Good ole boy Burt Reynolds drove a black Trans Am in the movie and everyone and his uncle all of a sudden wanted one.  Of course, by that time the ones they were selling were watered down versions with no where close to the power of the first ones.

Since we are not sure of the statute of constraints, let’s just say that any stories are presumed to start’Once on A Time’.

One of our favorite stories is when we were getting onto sunrise highway late one evening and a Camaro rolled up next to us and started revving his engine, well you can imagine the rest. Here was a poor soul who had not a clue of what was in store.  Since we don’t believe in street racing, it definitely was a good thing we were both going onto the entrance ramp.  When we were satisfied that no one was on the parkway at that point of night, we let the Beast Out To Play.  We never did see any more then his fading headlights.

One of the funniest moments was when we lived in upstate NY and my hubby went to the store to pick something up and this guy in a Mustang 2 pulled up next to him and my man had some fun ( hey, we are all titled infrequently ).  As Chuck tells it : You see at that time a local car dealer was running a TV spot featuring a Mustang two just destroying a Trans Am.  So this gentleman pulls up next to me, gunning his engine for all he is’s worth.  The light changes, he chirps his tires and flashes me an enormous smile as he takes off.  Well, I idle away from the light, give it just enough gas in first to drag even with him, then drop the hammer, lighting up both tires, throw second, light them up again and then ease off.  Drive down the road to the store.

When I come out of the store this guy has finally got there and is waiting for me and says,’but the commercial asserts Mustangs will beat the pants off the Trans Am.’ I terribly blithely replied,’Not this Trans Am!’

They don’t make them like this anymore.  It’s sad when you think about it!  Those among us who lived and grew up in the age of the muscle autos, street rods, saturday night cruise nights were very, very lucky.  I feel sorry for the youth of today that they missed out on all of this.

So what happened to that great 455 Trans Am, sadly the harsh upstate NY winters aren’t kind to autos and rust took the Trans Am from us.  However, we did replace it – with a customized 1973 Vette, which we drove cross country to California, but that is a whole nother story!
