Saturn SC2 is the short name from the sports coupe level of the first division of the Saturn auto produced at the beginning of the 90s. The launching of the S Series by General Motors was a smart plan to lower the impact of the Japanese imports on the American market. According to reviews Saturn SC2 brought little difference from SC1, the latter only received black outside mirrors while the SC2 variant remained with colored ones. Other features of the Saturn SC2 included a traction control system, an antibreak lock and standard fog lamps. Then, in terms of manual transmission, Saturn SC2 and SC1 were identical, and the same similarity remained in the dashboard look, in the wheelbase structure and in the dayltime lights. The model to have outsold Saturn Vue SUV is Saturn Aura, a mid-sized vehicle manufactured under the General Motors brand. The popularity of the concept became apparent in 2006 when it was made public at the New York Auto Show, and though it was meant as a replacement for the Saturn L-series, Saturn Aura brings a breath of fresh air to the entire Saturn collection. The result of this reorientation is market preference for American autos instead of European imports particularly since recently the the success belonged to the latter. Saturn Aura thus competes with its distant cousin: the European Opel Vectra.

The standard Saturn Aura has folding mirrors and side marker lights, and such specificities are tributary to European cars that served as a source of inspiration. The other aesthetic details make Saturn Aura a really pleasant car with 17 or 18 inch wheels and tires for all seasons in both the XR or XE models. The improvements in car appearance are relevant for the structure of the cabin too; now Saturn Aura allows the buyer a choice for saddle leather seats and back seat radio control. Yet, despite the real advantages in the standard model, Saturn Aura has been bad-mouthed for the quality of the materials used in the interior.

As for the technical characteristics of the Saturn Aura standard models, there is an assisted break system for all the four wheel disk brakes, heated seats and comprehensive front and lateral airbags, automatic steering control and stability control as well as remote vehicle start. The coupe and the sedan made the only two variants of Saturn Ion ever produced. The novelty this car brought was explainable by the gearbox that allowed room for five forward gears modified to fit to the regular manual gearbox. The fuel consume was positively influenced by such a gearbox structure with the potential to improve acceleration too. Moreover, with Saturn Ion, heat was no longer a problem for the planetary gear set.

An upgraded Saturn Ion variant appeared in 2004 as part of the Red Line designed by General Motors. The model was planned as a sportier car with a more powerful engine of 205 horsepower, a stiffer suspension and re-valved shock absorbers; the model relied on a 2.0 liter Ecotec engine known as the LSJ. In the same year, General Motors also launched a limited edition of Saturn Ion 3 that had all sorts of additional improvements in terms of interior and exterior design. Even if it were more expensive the cosmetic look was surely different. Only three color options were available: black onyx, chili pepper red and electric blue.

Until 2007, several additional changes were made in terms of Saturn Ion engine power and cabin decorations. Some of the varieties were also discontinued because of various technical issues that made their reliability questionable: this was the case with the Aisin model. The bad publicity was generated from all sorts of materials published by disatisfied customers. A re-modeling of the Saturn Ion had been announced for 2008, and the world wide web was full of pictures for the new model. And then Saturn Aura emerged.
